My Quest for Good Eats #7: Learning from Grandmother is your best bet

One thing that some may not know about Alton Brown is he is a good ole southern boy like me. It's yet another reason why I like him so much and kind of feel like he is the tv chef that fits me so well. I not only had a moment in life where I wore nothing but flower print shirts but also chose to speak proper english on my own accord and be a science nerd. So when I checked the recipe for my next assignment there weren't any big suprises. The recipe was biscuits and it happened to be his grandmothers recipe. The ingredients and style were uncannily similar to my own grandmothers so I did something that would not offend him in the least. I ran to my own grandmother to learn about the best biscuits I have ever eaten and ever will eat in my life. Explaining the process is something I won't do because I feel its a bit more subtle than just typing out a bunch of steps. Needless to say my grandmother is a wonderful teacher and under her guidance I made a stellar bunch of biscuts (picture in the link) I am proud of the work I did with this one and they tasted as good as they looked. It was easily the most satisfying recipe I have done so far but then again what could possibly beat learning from the person that got you into cooking in the first place? The response is obvious..nothing beats learning from your grandmother..nothing.

If Abbot and Costello were still around..

I got this funny thing in my email today and thought I would share it with you guys. I'm a huge fan of Abbot and Costello and if you don't know who that is Google it and you can thank me later.

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old to REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on...

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch, 'Who's on First?' might have turned out something like this:

COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking about buying a computer.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT:
Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT:
I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: For my office?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

ABBOTT: Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT:
The Word you get when you click the blue 'W'.

COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue 'w' if you don't start with some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT:
Money.

COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT:
Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT:
Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

(A few days later)

ABBOTT:
Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO:
How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on 'START'..... ........

My Quest for Good Eats #6- Experimenting with ice

It's been a while since I did one of these. Why you may ask? Well there was one thing standing in my way. The search for orange preserves. The recipe for sorbet in the Good Eats book was one for a key lime version but I had a problem. The test subjects don't like key lime. So I got to work doing what Alton taught me in his other books. Recipes don't always have to stick to everything that's on the page. So I realized that the recipe required a citrus so why not replace it with another? Orange was the answer! I went on the hunt for Orange Preserves and came up empty..even if I had gone with the original recipe key lime preserves were absent as well from the shelves. After a long search that had me going to other citys with better markets and even looking on my recent vacation to Gatlinburg I finally gave up and used the next best thing I could find. Orange marmalade. As I got my ingredients ready I realized something else absent from the kitchen..A grater for zests. I did my best with the tools I had and the recipe actually came out quite nice. The only real problem is I didn't get the zests as finely grated as I wanted so a few pieces had to be removed during eating but it wasn't a complete failure. Still A nice refreshing treat that I will keep in mind for warm summer days!

Samcast episode 69: There goes the neighborhood

On this weeks samcast we talk about another childhood memory that may go off the rails, How your face may be a security risk given you don't do one thing, We warn you about not getting up every now and then and how it may even kill you, as well as new batteries, and A PR nightmare Airbnb will not forget anytime soon.

Mister Rodgers next childhood memory to be possibly ruined: http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/07/31/pbs-mister-rodgers-spin-off/
